There is a fairly widespread opinion that prosthodontics is applied to a person who has lost one or more teeth, and to the elderly people. In fact, prosthodotics is also required if the patient has all of the teeth, but suffer from periodontitis or lower jaw -  temporomandibular joint diseases, when there is a pathological bite or teeth have lost a part of hard tissue, i.e. worn down. In the latter case, prosthodontics reinforces strongly damaged dental tissue.

A patient can choose one of the two forms of prosthesis: fixed or removable.

FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESIS

Fixed dentures are attached to the teeth and can not be removed. The types of fixed prosthesis are – bridges, crowns, veneers, onlays, or restorations on implants.

Bridges are made when the patient does not have at least one tooth. While producing bridges, the supporting adjacent teeth are ground and the prosthesis with a fixed in the middle artificial tooth is attached to the teeth. One or more artificial teeth in the middle cover the existing defects and restore the solidity of dental arch.

Dental crown is used to restore a damaged tooth, which is chipped, cracked or just worn down. It covers the entire tooth. Dental crown is made ​​so that could not differ from the natural teeth i. e. an appropriate shade, shape, size and function are adapted.

When there is small tooth damage or in order to restore precise view or function, dental veneers or onlays are used. Laminates are attached to the outer surface of the tooth to restore the tooth shape and color, and onlays are used for molar restorations instead of seals, because they accurately and qualitatively reproduce the anatomy of the tooth.

Fixed prostheses may also be divided into those that are made of metal-free basis and made ​​of metal. Metal ceramic prostheses are impervious to light, so they do not look so natural, as metal-free ones, which are usually made ​​of ceramic, zirconium or aluminum oxide.

Removable dentures should be removed for cleaning or going to bed. They are of two kinds – the arch supporting prostheses and dental plates.

Arch supporting prostheses have a thin metal base, which is casted by a special design. They do not take much space in the mouth, so do not disturb while speaking, the patient quickly gets used to wearing them. Such prostheses are attached by hooks or locking system to the supporting healthy teeth. This way of prosthodontics is good for restoring chewing function, but the patient should have a lot of his own strong teeth.

Applying prosthodontics with dentures it is possible to choose full or partial ones. It depends on how many teeth are left in the mouth. This is not an easy way of replacement for the doctor if the patient is completely without teeth. In order to restore the form, height, especially to what the patient has lost a long time ago, requires knowledge and experience. Sometimes dentures are fixed with special glue. Using them is not easy to get used to the changes in the mouth, since one has to learn to speak and eat, and this can cause problems.

Removable dentures are offered to patients only when there is no possibility to fix dental prostheses on the teeth or implants.
